The DARMASISWA scholarship program is available to foreign students from countries that have diplomatic relationships with Indonesia. Initially established in 1974 as part of the ASEAN initiative, the DARMASISWA Indonesian Scholarship for International Students program admitted only students from ASEAN. However, in 1976, the program was extended to students from other countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and the USA. The DARMASISWA scholarship program is a one-year non-degree program that enables participants to study the Indonesian language (Bahasa Indonesia), arts, music, crafts, and other specific subjects at 68 higher education institutions in Indonesia. For the 2023/2024 academic year, 68 institutions will participate in the program. The program aims to expose participants to the rich cultural heritage of Indonesia and promote cross-cultural understanding. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the customs, traditions, and values of Indonesia, as well as its history, politics, and socio-economic landscape.
